Box Score TACOMA, Wash. – After an 82-79 overtime victory last night, the Pacific Lutheran University women's basketball team was unable to beat the University of Puget Sound on consecutive evenings as the Loggers took game two on Saturday night 72-60.
Trailing 28-27 at halftime, sophomore guard
Toni Thibert gave PLU its only lead of the game with a layup to begin the third quarter. PLU was only able to keep the advantage for 18 seconds as UPS answered with a bucket on the ensuing possession. It remained a two-possession game for nearly the entire third quarter before the Logger lead swelled to as many as 12 on two occasions in the fourth.
PLU's defense was exceptional on Saturday, holding the Loggers to under 30 percent shooting on field goals and three-point tries, while also forcing 13 turnovers. The visitors though, coughed up the ball 24 times, which led to 20 Logger points and were also outrebounded 48-39.
Megan Drake led the way for PLU with 14, and
Emma Janousek chipped in 13.
Madison Salisbury grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. UPS was led by Kennedy Brown's 20 points. Jordyn Reverman and Katie Minnehan also scored in double figures for the victors, with 16 and 10, respectively.
The Loggers (1-3, 1-3 NWC) blitzed the Lutes by scoring the first 10 points of the game and opening up the scoring on a 13-2 run.
Ava Edmonds canned a three-pointer to end the run and
Emma Janousek drilled the first of two buzzer beaters to make it 15-8 after the first quarter.
PLU nearly erased the UPS run to start the contest in the second. Drake scored a pair of field goals, while Janousek scored seven to give her 10 first-half points, including a three-pointer from the right wing as time expired before the half.
The Lutes (1-4, 1-4 NWC) will remain on the road next weekend when they head to Walla Walla to take on Whitman College for a pair of Northwest Conference contests. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday evening.
