TACOMA, Wash. – The Pacific Lutheran University and University of Puget Sound women's soccer teams were locked in another tight battle on East Field on Sunday afternoon, but an overtime goal by the Loggers that was nearly saved by the outstretched arms of the Lute keeper provided the difference in a 1-0 overtime final.
The ball simply didn't bounce PLU's way on Sunday. With 14 minutes gone by in the second half, sophomore
Vera Panescu-Reich ripped a shot at UPS keeper Chaylea Tome. Tome got a glove on it, but the ball continued backwards and ricocheted off the crossbar and directly downward into Tome's lap, who fell over while leaping to block the shot.
The Lutes continue to push things offensively and a header by
Alyssa Jordan nearly broke the tie again and forced Tome to make another stop.
In overtime, UPS registered both shots, and it was a strike by Tess Carden that bounced off
Ashton Huppert's leaping attempt and rolled into the net that lit the scoreboard and provided the Loggers with the win.
PLU outshot UPS 11-3 on the day, but placed just the two second-half attempts on net. The Lutes also held a 6-0 advantage on corner kicks.
The Lutes will look to bounce back from a pair of tough losses this weekend against Whitman College on Saturday and Sunday. Kickoff against the Blues is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on both days.
