Baseball KOs Boxers for Sunday Sweep

TACOMA, Wash. - The Pacific Lutheran University baseball team flipped the script on Sunday, earning a doubleheader sweep at the expense of Northwest Conference rival Pacific University to split the weekend series. The Lutes blasted four home runs in an 11-7 win in the opener before a Cole Trotignon walkoff single gave the Lutes' the 3-2 victory in game two.

"Saturday was a tough day for us," said Head Coach Nolan Soete.

"Pacific did a great job hammering mistakes at the plate and we lost a couple of close games to a good team. I'm proud of how our guys bounced back today. The offense set the tone in the first game today. Ferguson did a good job battling on the mound and Cohen was good in relief. Gormley had a huge day and Haworth and Trotignon were locked in as well. Snyder has his best outing of the year. He was extremely efficient. We played well in all three phases and it was a good day."

A power surge in the opener, propelled the homestanding Lutes to an 11-7 victory after cranking out four home runs.

Austin Gormley got things started in the bottom of the first, blasting a solo home run to left field for the early 1-0 lead. Gormley was at it again in the third inning, blasting another home run to left to give the Lutes' a 4-1 advantage before Cole Trotignon blasted a solo home run on the next at bat.

A Kenton Robillard double plated two more runs while a Gormley single brought in a pair, pushing the Lute lead to 9-1.

The Boxers scored three in the sixth inning but the Lutes counter with two more runs in the bottom of the frame, courtesy of a Jordan Haworth home run, the Lutes' fourth round-tripper of the game.

Pacific pushed across three more in the ninth but were unable to come any closer as Jonathan Cohen registered three punchouts in the final inning to secure the 11-7 win.

Gormley finished the game four-for-five at the plate with six RBIs and three runs scored. Sean Kauffman was hit by pitch three times and took full advantage, scoring two runs while Haworth and Robillard both drove in a pair of runs.

Noah Ferguson collected the win, striking out seven in six innings of action. Trevor Mason and Cohen combined to toss the final three frames, racking up four strikeouts.

The Lutes wasted little time getting on the board in the second game with Andy Schmitz belting a leadoff triple to right center field to open the bottom of the first. Schmitz would score the next at-bat with a Gormley sacrifice fly giving the Lutes the 1-0 lead.

Pacific tied the game with a run of their own in the second but the Lutes regained the lead in the fourth with a Sean Kauffman double driving in Ashton Barton

The pesky Boxers once again leveled the score with a Jordan Hara solo home run tying the game at 2-2 in the sixth. In the seventh, Schmitz reached base on a two-base error by the Boxers and eventually touched home for the winning run on a walkoff single up the middle by Trotignon.

Schmitz finished the game two-for-four with two runs scored while Trotignon also went two-for-four.

Tommy Snyder went the distance in game two, striking out five in seven innings of work.

The Lutes are back on the diamond on Saturday, traveling to Salem, Oregon for a four-game series against Willamette University.
