Women’s Soccer Wins with Third Straight Shutout

TACOMA, Wash. – The Pacific Lutheran University women's soccer team used the same formula with the same success as it did yesterday.  A strong defensive effort and timely offense from a senior led the Lutes to a 1-0 victory over Whitworth University on Sunday at East Field.

"I'm very proud of our process today," said Head Coach Seth Spidahl.  "We weren't super happy with how we performed yesterday but the players were awesome in their response.  Credit to Whitworth this weekend as they have changed their style and system of play and were a tough opponent."

On a cold and wet afternoon, the Lutes seemed unbothered by Mother Nature and dominated the Pirates for the second straight day.  Despite a scoreless first 45 minutes, PLU led the shot total 5-1 and had three shots on goal to zero for the Pirates.

The home attack finally broke through in the 54th minute.  Alyssa Leong passed the ball across the field to Ellie Reardon who sent it all the way back across the field, right to the foot of Ellie Johnson who fired the ball past the Pirate keeper.

"Our second half was very good," said Spidahl.  "We had one of our best goals of the year by Ellie Johnson.  Maddie (Landreth) had a great free kick that was called back.  Sawyer Anderson had a very good game.  Our first wins at home this spring against a good opponent with Senior Day thrown in there.  Our program definitely improved this weekend."

The Lutes continued to control possession to the final whistle and did not allow a shot on goal for the entire match and just two shots total.  PLU also held a distinct 8-1 edge in corner kicks.

PLU (5-3-1, 5-3-1 NWC) will close its season next Sunday when they host Whitman College at 11:00 a.m.
