TACOMA, Wash. - The Pacific Lutheran University women's tennis squad picked up its second win over crosstown nemesis University of Puget Sound in as many months, securing a 5-4 victory on Saturday in a Northwest Conference dual match inside the Sprinker Rec Center.
"I'm so proud how the Lutes competed today," said Head Coach
Cheri Campbell.Â
"Bayley and Taylor won their doubles and the team match came down to their singles matches. Bayley split sets and came out swinging in the third set to win 6-1. Taylor's first set took 90 minutes and then she dominated her second set to get the win for the team match."
Bayley Gochanour and
Taylor Stokes provided the Lutes' (3-2, 2-2 NWC) lone victory in doubles play, toppling the Loggers' No. 2 tandem 8-5.
In singles, it was PLU's superior depth that paved the way to the win, earning victories in the No. 3 through No. 6 matches.
Gochanour rallied to the, 5-7, 6-0, 6-1, win at No. 3 while Stokes grinded out a, 7-6, 6-1, win at No. 4. JIllian Chong breezed to the, 6-1, 6-2, win at No. 5 while at No. 6,
Meggie Burnett, collected the, 6-4, 6-4, win.
"Jillian won her match easily at No. 5. Meggie showed the growth she's made this season with beating her opponent after losing to the same player in the non-conference match. This was a great team win and I'm excited to see how this momentum helps us against a tough opponent next week."
PLU is back on the courts next Saturday, hosting Linfield University at 2 p.m.
