SPOKANE, Wash. - Jillian Chong won both her doubles and singles matches but the short-handed Pacific Lutheran University women's tennis team came up on the wrong side of a 7-2 non-conference dual match against Whitworth University on Sunday at the Scotfield Tennis Center.
Hannah Jeffries and
Jillian Chong picked up a decisive 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles in their first ever match together, dispatching the Pirates' (5-5) top tandem of Meredith Bedford and Kara Nelson. At No. 1 ,
Bayley Gochanour and
Taylor Stokes were upended 8-1.
In singles play, Chong picked up her fourth win of the season, defeating Bedford 8-2 at the No. 4 spot. Fellow first-year
Meggie Burnett played hard at the No. 5 spot, getting nipped 8-6 by Kara Nelson.
The Lutes (3-5) were in an early hole before the match even started, having to forfeit the No. 3 doubles match and the No. 6 singles match after suiting up just five healthy players.
"It was another tough loss but I'm proud of how the Lutes competed," said Head Coach
Cheri Campbell.
"An injury put us behind two matches before we stepped on the court. Hannah and Jillian teamed up for the first time this year to win #2 doubles handily. Jillian was hitting the ball with precision and Meggie played her best match of the season. She continues to improve every week!"
Pacific Lutheran remains on the road next weekend, trekking to Vancouver, Washington to face Lewis & Clark College on Saturday.
