PORTLAND, Ore. - Jillian Chong collected her fifth singles win of the season on Saturday but the short-staffed Pacific Lutheran University women's tennis squad fell short 8-1 to host Lewis & Clark College in a Northwest Conference dual match at the L&C Tennis Courts.
Chong defeated the Pioneers' (5-5, 4-3 NWC) Natalie Kowal, 6-4, 6-3, at the No. 4 singles position. It was the first-year's second consecutive win playing out of the No. 4 spot after earning a win last Sunday against Whitworth University.
Bayley Gochanour hung tough at No. 2 before ultimately falling, 6-3, 6-4, while
Meggie Burnett battled in a, 6-2, 6-2, setback at No. 5.
In doubles, Gochanour and
Taylor Stokes came up short 8-5 at the No. 1 position.
"We were short players again which definitely started us behind in the scorebook," said Head Coach
Cheri Campbell.
"Jillian stepped up and won hug at the No. 4 spot, playing mentally tough throughout the match. Bayley competed well, playing over two hours in 80 degrees in her singles loss. I'm proud of how all the Lutes competed, especially while battling the heat. We're looking forward to closing out the season with a home match against a small Whitman team."
The Lutes (3-6, 2-5 NWC) cap off the 2021 season next Saturday, hosting Whitman College at 2 p.m. at the Sprinker Recreation Center.
