Box Score TACOMA, Wash. — The Pacific Lutheran University women's tennis team opened Northwest Conference play with a bang on Saturday, winning four of the five singles matches in a 5-2 victory over crosstown nemesis University of Puget Sound at the UPS Tennis Pavilion.
The victory was the Lutes' (7-4, 1-0 NWC) second straight over the crosstown foes, having previously defeated the Loggers (0-4, 0-1 NWC) 6-1 back on Feb. 15.Â
"It was a stellar overall performance today by the Lutes," said Head Coach
Michael Harmon.
"Excellent second set adjustment by Chloe. Jillian was rock solid in doubles and singles, dropping only one game."
The match was deadlocked after doubles with PLU dropped the No. 1 match while
Jillian Chong and
Meggie Burnett prevailed 8-0 at No. 2.
In singles,
Chloe Andrewjeski continued to impress in her debut season, downing Paige Shinall, 7-5, 6-2, at No. 1. Chong cruised, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 3 while
Carmen Kiewert secured a, 6-1, 6-2, win at No. 4. Burnett collected the Lutes' fourth singles victory, winning by default at No. 5.Â
"Carmen won her debut conference match as well by applying some great on-court tactics and net rushing. Still lots to work on before Pacific and Willamette on the road next weekend."
The Lutes continue NWC play next weekend, facing Pacific University on Saturday at noon in Forest Grove, Oregon.
