TACOMA, Wash. - Alyssa Leong played the role of hero on Friday evening, netting a goal in the 27th minute to guide the Pacific Lutheran University women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over eighth-ranked Wheaton College in the home opener at East Field.
Leong tallied her second goal of the season in the 27th minute off a feed from
Ashlee Gormley. The assist was Gormley's first helper of the year.
Leong's strike proved to be the lone goal of the game as the Lutes (3-0) held off a late charge from the Thunder (1-1-1) to collect the win and remain undefeated on the young season.
Eva Wirth tallied her second clean sheet of the season, turning away a career-high seven shots, including five in the second 45 minutes of play.
"It feels really good (getting a career-high seven saves), especially being a freshman coming into something that's brand new to me," said Wirth.
"This completely boosts my confidence. Coming into this game I was so nervous and that last 15 minutes was very nerve-racking, but I had my team and they came out and played hard. My defense I have to give them this game, I couldn't have done it without them."
The Lutes return to the pitch tomorrow afternoon, hosting local rival Evergreen State College at 4 p.m.
