TACOMA, Wash. –
Lily Dose scored her first career goal and Ashlee Gormlee notched her first goal of the season on Saturday as the Pacific Lutheran University women's soccer team recorded its third straight shutout with a 2-0 blanking of Whitworth University.
Dose opened the scoring in the 22
nd minute after she took a nifty pass from classmate
Alyssa Leong and booted it past the Pirate keeper.
The Lutes dominated the opening 45 minutes, allowing just one shot in the first half. Gabriella Coprivnicar had a great shot on net, but freshman
Eva Wirth was up to the challenge as she leaped and poked the ball over the crossbar and out of bounds.
PLU kept the pressure on in the second half and gave itself some breathing room when Gormlee ripped a strike into the upper left corner of the net and out of reach of Whitworth keeper Kate Nelson.
As a team, the Lutes held a 19-3 shot advantage over the Pirates and an even more impressive 10-1 effort on shots on net. PLU forced Nelson to make eight saves in the defeat. It was the third straight shutout Wirth and the Lute defense. Through five games, PLU is outscoring its opponents 14-1.
It was a terrific start to the Northwest Conference season for PLU, as they begin their quest for a fifth consecutive league title. The Lutes will host Whitman College tomorrow at 12:00 p.m.
