MEQUON, Wis. - The Pacific Lutheran University women's soccer team closed out its season-opening road swing to Wisconsin unscathed on Friday afternoon, belting host Concordia University 3-1 at Fitting Field.
Hannah Cecil opened the scoring in the 34th minute, netting her first collegiate goal off a pass from
Julia Causbie. The Lutes (2-0) would carry that advantage into the halftime break, owning a commanding 12-2 edge in shots, including all six shots on goal.
Vera Panescu-Reich padded the Lute lead with an insurance score in the 55th minute, her second goal of the season with
Lily Dose providing the assist before
Alyssa Leong upped the tally to 3-0 in the 62nd minute off a helper from
Kimber Thomas.
The host Falcons (1-1) got on the board in the 74th minute but it was too little, too late as the Lutes cruised to their second two-goal victory in the last three days.
"We're so proud of our team today," said Head Coach
Seth Spidahl. "We faced some adversity with a 1 a.m. fire alarm that wokes us up and the assistant referee showed up 20 minutes after kickoff so we started late. The maturity this group showed to deal with all that was awesome to see."
PLU dominated the stat sheet, ripping off 22 shots, including 10 of the 12 taken on frame.
"Hannah scored her first career goal, Vera scored her second goal in two games, and Alyssa opened her account today as well. We had some great team defending and our backline was solid all weekend."
Goalkeeper
Eva Wirth tallied her second victory in net, logging all 90 minutes between the posts and making one save.
"Super pumped about the culture and standards that are developing within this group. It's been a long road trip and now we're excited to get back home and open our home campaign against a very good Wheaton program."
The Lutes are back on the pitch next Friday, opening a four-game homestand at East Field against Wheaton College. Kickoff is slated for 4 p.m.
