WALLA WALLA, Wash. — The Pacific Lutheran women's soccer team put together a dominant second-half performance Saturday to defeat Whitman 4-2 in Northwest Conference action.
Julia Causbie, Olivia Boehm and Lily Dose all scored in the final 28 minutes to lift the Lutes.
"Halftime was basically a talk about how this isn't PLU and this isn't good enough," PLU coach Seth Spidahl said. "I am certainly proud of the way the players took this information and motivation and used it with their attitude and mindset."
Whitman jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a goal in the 13th minute, but Riley Shaver answered with the equalizer in the 37th minute.
The Blues (4-4-0 overall, 1-4-0 NWC) responded with another goal in the 42nd minute to take a 2-1 lead into the break.
"Last year we were down at halftime and couldn't find a way back," Spidahl said of his team's 1-0 setback at Whitman last season. "This year we went behind and we answered. We went behind and found our way out of it."
It was all Lutes (7-1-1, 4-1-0) all the time after that, however.
Causbie scored in the 62nd minute, slotting a shot into the lower right corner to tie the game.
Boehm then scored the game-winner in the 72nd minute, going top shelf unassisted.
Dose capped off the magical second half off an assist by Alyssa Leong in the 87th minute to give the Lutes a second consecutive victory.
"Tactically we pressed a little higher and they did a good job with that and had some great finishes," Spidahl said. "We had four different goalscorers and none of them were our center-forwards so that was good to see. Riley Shaver and Katelyn McDougal came on and made a positive impact."
Shaylin Cesar made five saves in goal to earn the victory.
PLU is back in action at 12 p.m. Sunday at Whitworth.
