Men's tennis kicks off season in Portland

RESULTS

PORTLAND, Ore. — The Pacific Lutheran University men's tennis team opened the 2022-23 season over the weekend, competing at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Northwest Regional hosted from Friday through Sunday by Lewis & Clark College in Portland.

"We competed well given the short season and limited practice time this fall," PLU coach Michael Harmon said. "We went 3-6 overall, which was par for the course given our young and inexperienced roster.

"This was a good learning experience for the young Lutes and hopefully motivational for the upcoming spring season."

On Friday, sophomore Caleb Grass went to three sets before falling 6-1, 2-6, 10-5 against Linfield's Nick Gabelman.

Grass and partner Dillon Wells partnered against the No. 2 seed from Lewis & Clark, playing solid against the higher ranked pair.

"We were heavy underdogs and had nothing to lose in this one," Harmon said. "The guys played very loose and aggressive and came up with some brilliant shots, winning a few games against them.

"They definitely raised their level of play and it was fun to see."

On Saturday, the Lutes went 3-1 in singles with two wins by Wells and one by Grass.

On Sunday, Wells was the last Lute standing before falling to Gunnar Wollar from Whitman in straight sets.

The tournament was the lone match for the abbreviated fall season. The team will return to official match play in the spring.
