Women's Track & Field: The Lutes will host the PLU Open on Saturday but the biggest news is two-time national champion
Bailey Forsyth will be competing at the NCAA Division III Indoor Championships on Friday and Saturday. Forsyth will be competing in the 60-meter dash and the 200-meter dash and is the first Lute qualifier to the Indoor Championships since 2005.
Last weekend the Lutes opened up the outdoor season at the University of Puget Sound's Ed Boitano Invitational, winning three events and taking the team title. Forsyth won the 100,
Kayden Hulquist won the 100-meter hurdles while
Lily Luksich won the pole vault and set a school record.
The Lutes scored 156.5 points to win the 11-team meet, owning a 12.5-point lead on second-place Whitworth University. On Monday, Luksich was honored as the NWC Field Athlete of the Week while Forsyth (60 & 200), Hulquist (long jump and 60 hurdles),
Zoey Diviney (800), Luksich (pole vault) and
Kristine Nguyen (pole vault) all earned All-West Region honors for the indoor season from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
Men's Track & Field: Pacific Lutheran opened the outdoor season with a bang, tying for the team title at the Ed Boitano Invitational.
The Lutes had five event winners at the meet with
Keola Sanchez winning both the 100-meters and 200-meters while
Grady Lemma won both the 110-meter hurdles and the 400-meter hurdles. In the field events,
Corey Solomon took the title in the pole vault. Also making a splash was
Ryan Stracke who placed second in the 10K, narrowly missing setting a school record in the event.
PLU scored 161 points, tying with Whitworth for the top spot.
Earlier this week, shot putters
Masum Real and
Wyatt Tayon were honored by the USTFCCCA, both securing All-West Region honors.
Men's Golf: The Lutes hoisted the Washington Cup on Sunday, defeating in-state rivals Whitworth and Puget Sound for the crown in the match play event at the Yakima Country Club.
The Lutes rolled the Loggers 5-0 on Saturday before squeezing out the 3-2 win on Sunday over Whitworth for the title.
Caden Arnold and
Ryan Pearson won both their matches over the weekend with Arnold netting NWC Golfer of the Week honors on Tuesday.
Women's Swimming: The wait is almost over for NWC Swimmer of the Year and NWC Freshman of the Year
Jessica Ordaz. The Los Angeles, California native earned a ticket to the NCAA Division III Swimming Championships when the field was announced on Feb. 23. Starting Wednesday, Ordaz will be in Indianapolis, Indiana competing in the 50-yard freestyle, the 100-yard butterfly, and the 200-yard individual medley.
Baseball: Tommy Snyder threw a complete game gem on Saturday as the Lutes (9-5, 5-4 NWC) thrashed host George Fox University 16-1 in the series opener but the Bruins would get the last laugh, earning a 3-2 extra innings win later in the day before winning the series on Sunday with a 10-2 victory.
Snyder struck out seven, allowed just three hits and one walk in nine innings of work. Offensively,
Jordan Haworth had four hits and scored four runs in the blowout win.
Cole Trotignon homered in game two but the Bruins scored an unearned run in the 11th to net the win.
A five-run fifth inning sabotaged the Lutes on Sunday as GFU earned the series win.
Women's Rowing: The Lutes compete twice on American Lake this weekend, first on Saturday at the Logger Invite before squaring off against boathouse rival UPS on Sunday in the 45th Lamberth Cup. PLU holds a 28-16 lead in the Lamberth Cup series, including winning four of the last five.
Last weekend saw the Lutes open the spring racing season at the PLU Invite. The 12th-ranked Lutes varsity eight clocked a time of 7:21.80 to start the day while the second varsity eight finished in 8:20.8. PLU's varsity eight didn't race head-to-head against the Loggers but raced 8.3 seconds faster than UPS in the morning and was 6.4 seconds faster in the afternoon session.
Men's Tennis: Hampus Pers Eliasson won both of his matches but the Lutes (2-1, 0-1 NWC) suffered their first loss of the dual meet season, coming up short 7-2 against Lewis & Clark College.
Pers Eliasson and partner
Michael Campbell clawed out an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles while in singles action, Pers Eliasson prevailed, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 2. The Gothenburg, Sweden native is currently undefeated in both singles and doubles this spring.
Softball: Pacific Lutheran (12-8, 4-4 NWC) took the opener 2-1 against host George Fox courtesy of an
Erin McGrath two-run home run in the fourth inning but the Lutes were unable to replicate that magic the rest of the series, falling 6-4, 9-1, and 10-5 to the Bruins.
Erin McGrath is having a historic season offensively, leading the nation in both home runs (seven) and RBIs (27). Not to be overlooked is
Casey Wright who's hitting .426 at the plate with 10 extra base hits and 16 RBIs.
As a team, the Lutes lead the nation in hits, home runs, and total runs.
Women's Tennis: The Lutes (2-7, 0-1 NWC) opened conference play on Sunday in Portland, stumbling 9-0 to host Lewis & Clark.
Taylor Stokes and
Ella Burriss fell 8-3 at No. 1 doubles while in singles play
Lilian Nguyen hung tough at No. 5 before coming up short, 7-5, 6-3.
