Box Score SPOKANE, Wash. - Michael Campbell netted his third singles win of the spring on Sunday but the Pacific Lutheran University men's tennis squad was unable to match the depth of host and in-state rival Whitworth University, suffering an 8-1 defeat in a Northwest Conference dual match.
Campbell needed three sets to pull out the win at No. 1 singles, etching out a, 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6) win over the Pirates' Ethan Violette.Campbell's singles win came on the heels of a tough doubles match with partner
Hampus Pers Eliasson. Occupying the No. 1 position, Campbell and Pers Eliasson were edged 8-7 (12-10) in a marathon match against Whitworth's (2-9, 2-2 NWC) top tandem of Violette and Joseph Greco.
Derek Stone and
Caleb Grass proved a formidable challenge at No. 2 doubles, falling by an 8-5 scoreline.
Pers Eliasson fell, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 2 singles while
Alex Richter came up short, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 6.
The Lutes (2-4, 0-3 NWC) are back at home next Saturday, hosting Linfield University at 1 p.m. at the Sprinker Rec Center.
