Baseball Splits with Bruins

NEWBERG, Ore. – It was a tale of two games at George Fox University on Saturday for the Pacific Lutheran University baseball team.  The Lutes blew open a close game late to win the opener 16-1, but dropped Game 2, 3-2, in an 11-inning thriller in the nightcap.

"Game 1 was a complete team effort," said PLU Manager Nolan Soete.  "Snyder set the tone on the mound and the offense did a great job putting together a lot of quality at-bats.  Haworth had four hits including a home run.  Boyd and Barton had a good game and Doten hammered another home run.  We played great defense.  Game 2 was a well-pitched game for both teams.  Howell, Ferguson and Gregory did their job in the mound we just didn't provide them with enough run support.  We look forward to competing for a series win tomorrow."

Game 1
Senior Tommy Snyder pitched a complete game, three-hitter and the Lute offense exploded for 20 hits in a 16-1 victory in Game 1.

Senior All-American Jordan Haworth hit a solo homer to left to get the lineup moving in the fourth inning.  Another senior, Tori Doten, hit his team-leading third home run of the season in the sixth to put the Lutes up 2-0.

With Snyder still cruising on the mound, the visitors exploded for 14 runs over the final three runs to turn the opening game of the three-game set into a laugher.  Jonathan Stone touched the lefty for a solo homer in the eighth inning, but it was already 10-0 at that point.  Snyder struck out seven in the performance, allowed just one walk and faced just two over the minimum.

At the plate 10 Lutes combined for 20 hits, including Haworth who had four hits, scored four times, walked and drove in three.  Catcher Ashton Barton added three singles and four RBI, while Connor Lemma also had a trio of safeties.  Alex Boyd, Doten and Andy Schmitz also had two base hits.

Game 2
The PLU bats went cold in the nightcap as they eked out just two runs and fell in 11 innings.

In the top of the 11th, the Lutes looked poised to threaten for the first time since sixth inning, but it would not come to be.  With one out, Connor Lemma beat out an infield single and Ethan Keintz blooped what looked like to be a single into right field, but the right fielder convinced Lemma he would make the catch and after the ball hit the turf, the senior was thrown out at second base.  In the bottom half, the Bruins got the leadoff man all the way to second on an error by the left fielder.  Alex Gregory got the next two batters out, but couldn't get the third as George Fox singled and walked off with the win.

PLU held a 2-0 lead after five complete as Cole Trotignon drilled a home run to left field to light the scoreboard and Alex Boyd grounded into a fielder's choice in the fifth that scored Tori Doten

Spencer Howell did not get a decision after being charged with just one run after he exited after 5 1/3 innings.  Howell struck out seven and gave up just two hits before passing the baton to Noah Ferguson.  Ferguson tossed 2 2/3 innings and got six of his eight outs via the strikeout.  Gregory was assigned the loss despite not allowing an earned run over the final 2 2/3 innings.

At the plate, Andy Schmitz, Doten and Lemma all had a pair of hits to lead the offense.

The Lutes and Bruins will lock up again tomorrow at noon.  PLU has yet to drop a series this season.
