NEWBERG, Ore. – Needing a victory to win its third consecutive Northwest Conference series, the Pacific Lutheran University baseball team came up short at George Fox University on Sunday, 10-2.
"We got beat in every phase of the game today," said PLU Skipper
Nolan Soete. "Credit to George Fox, they were the better team on the mound, in the field and at the plate this weekend. We will learn from our mistakes, work hard and look to bounce back this week."
Â
The Lutes (9-5, 5-4 NWC) played from behind all day after going down 2-0 in the third inning.Â
Ashton Barton doubled in
Tori Doten in the following inning to halve the score, but the Bruins scored eight runs over the next three innings to take a commanding 10-1 lead. PLU scored an unearned run in the ninth when
Anthony Adams came home from second after
Rowan Amann reached on a throwing error by the George Fox defense.Â
Â
Offensively, Barton was the only Lute with multiple hits and was credited with the only RBI.Â
Garrett Wong had a pinch-hit single in the ninth and
Andy Schmitz reached twice with a single and a walk.Â
Â
On the bump, starter
Jonathan Cohen (0-2) was tagged with the loss after allowing two runs on four hits in 2.2 innings pitched. Jack Robinnette got four outs, but gave up a run.Â
Cole Trotignon allowed six runs on six hits after getting just six outs and
Nathan Anderson allowed two hits, two walks, and a run after retiring just one batter. The Lutes' final pitcher of the day,
Trevor Mason was the only hurler not to give up a run as he threw a scoreless final 1.2 innings and struck out three.Â
Â
PLU will look to get back on track on Thursday when they head to sunny Southern California to take on California Lutheran University.Â
