SALEM, Ore. — Hannah Cecil and
Alyssa Leong both scored twice, powering the Pacific Lutheran University women's soccer squad to a 4-1 victory over Northwest Conference rival Willamette University on Sunday.
Â
The Lutes needed less than eight minutes to get on the scoreboard with Cecil scoring unassisted 7:47 into the opening half. Leong doubled the PLU advantage in the 31st minute, sneaking one past the Bearcat keeper off a feed from
Olivia Boehm.Â
Â
Host Willamette broke up the shutout in the 50th minute to narrow the gap to a single goal but the Lutes cemented the win with late scores from Cecil in the 83rd minute and Leong in the 88th. Cecil's strike was her fifth goal of the season, scoring off an assist from
Ellie Reardon while the game clincher from Leong in the 88thwas her fourth goal of the young campaign.
Â
Shaylin Cesar had a big game in goal, making 10 saves in 90 minutes of work to secure the win.
"Credit to Willamette, they're a much improved team. Happy for Hannah and Alyssa to get two goals each," said Head Coach
Seth Spidahl.
"Willamette answered in the second half and we showed some great character to knuckle under some tough times to find a couple late goals to secure the win. Weird week with the Thursday game but we're getting back to our normal rhythm and process of getting ready for games on the weekend."
Â
PLU is back in action next Saturday, trekking across the Cascades to face Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington.Â
