Rowing 1V Finishes 3rd in Opening Races of Spring

Results

TACOMA, Wash. — The six-time Northwest Conference Champion Pacific Lutheran University women's rowing team competed in its first regatta of the spring on Saturday, dipping their oars into the chilly waters of American Lake at the PLU Invitational.

"We had a great day of racing against some of the bigger schools in the area. Our goal going in the weekend was to stay in our 'tunnel' and work simply and row our race, and that's exactly what we did," said Head Coach Lizzie Mitchell.

The Lutes' varsity eight boat opened the day, cruising down the 2,000-meter course in seven minutes, 43.88 seconds to finish behind crews from Division I Gonzaga University and Seattle University.

The 1V8+ was back in the water for a second race, placing third in 7:48.65 against crews from Division II Western Washington University and Gonzaga.

PLU's second varsity eight was fourth in their first race, crossing the finish in 8:21.83 before placing third in their second race of the day in 8:53.61.

"We have a long season with a lot of speed to gain and potential to tap into. I love racing up to give the team a chance to see some real speed that comes out of D1 and D2. Obviously they showed that to us today and I hope to build on that as we continue into the depths of our spring racing season."

PLU is back on the water next Saturday, competing at the Logger Invitational back on American Lake before contesting the annual Lamberth Cup the following day.
