Walk-On to PLU Women’s Rowing

No Experience? No Problem.

Most of our team never rowed before college

Nearly every athlete who raced for the Lutes at the 2025 NCAA National Championship started as a walk-on! Just like you, they took a chance, and now they are part of the PLU Rowing Legacy. You could be next!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What’s the practice schedule?
Fall: 4 practices/week through early November
Spring: 5–6 practices/week
Water practices at American Lake, land training on campus in the Names Fitness Center
Morning practices to avoid class conflicts

What’s travel and racing like?
Most races are in WA and OR, with bigger trips to CA and beyond. We end our season in Sacramento and aim to return to the NCAA Championship.  We miss only a few days of classes in the Spring due to travel, and professors are notified in advance to excuse you.

Do I have to be tall or already athletic?
Anyone can be a champion! If you’re competitive and willing to work hard, you will succeed. We also have a special role called the “coxswain”, ideal for smaller-bodied leaders with sharp minds. They steer and lead the crew.

Can I do this and still focus on academics?
Yes! Our team is made up of STEM majors, nurses, artists, and everything in between. We prioritize school and provide the structure to help you succeed. You’ll get lots of support from the coaching staff, administration, and your teammates. This past year, our team GPA was 3.5, and six of our athletes were CRCA Scholar-Athletes (a big deal). We work with each athlete to make sure they can prioritize school, life, and rowing.

What do I need to join?
We will be holding an open, 2-week Learn-to-Row starting September 16th. To be medically cleared to participate, you’ll need:

Don’t let this part intimidate you! We’re here to help every step of the way.
