Basketball Teams Host Annual Clinic with Special Olympics

TACOMA, Wash. — The Pacific Lutheran University Athletic Department's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) hosted its annual Special Olympics Basketball clinic earlier this month on Saturday, January 18, welcoming over 50 participants to Olson Gymnasium.

"It was such a great experience to give back to our community. We all left with huge smiles on our faces! It was so special to take this time during a busy season to step back and remember it's bigger than basketball," said basketball student-athlete Jaida Wood.

Wood was among the members of the men's and women's basketball teams that gave back and volunteered at the clinic which was notable for being the only Saturday the teams had off during the months of January and February.

"This team has a heart for service and for helping others," said Women's Basketball Head Coach Lee Aduddell.

"The fact that they spent their off day sharing their time and expertise is a testament to the character of these young women."

PLU is a longtime partner with Special Olympics, holding a winter clinic annually since the 2011-2012 academic year. That collaboration is part of larger partnership between NCAA Division III and Special Olympics with the purpose of enhancing the lives of Division III student-athletes and Special Olympics athletes through a mutual learning experience; providing a platform for recognition of Special Olympics and Division III athletes within their communities, and raising awareness of Special Olympics, its programs, and services.

The Lutes host their annual free National Girls and Women in Sports Day clinic this Saturday, Feb. 1 from 1-3 p.m. for girls in grades 1st through sixth. Campers will receive a free shirt, a ball, and a free lunch, along with entry into the PLU basketball games against Whitworth University starting at 4 p.m. To register visit: LINK
