WALLA WALLA, Wash. — Liv Olson second brace of the season in back-to-back weeks propels the Pacific Lutheran University women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over the Whitman College Blues on Saturday afternoon.
PLU improves their record to 5-2-4 overall and 5-0-2 in Northwest Conference play which puts them on top of the table by two points over cross-town rival University of Puget Sound after their draw today with Whitworth.
"Whitman is a very good team who were probably better than us today overall," Head Coach
Seth Spidahl mentioned. "We had to be one goals better today. I'm proud of the character we showed in the second half. Sometimes you're not going to be the better overall team in the game, but you still need to find a way to win and that was what today was all about. There's lots of soccer left, so we are not worried about standings yet. We want to get better each and every day."
The Lutes started off the game with a bang in third minute,
Kiana Gutierrez whipped a ball off a corner between the six yard line and the penalty spot, which Olson flicked a header back through the Blues goalkeeper 1-0. Whitman would then equalize in the 20th minute tying up the game at one a piece. Olson then would call game in the 70th minute finishing off a redirected header from
Bella Hanna that laced the net to give PLU the lead 2-1.
This is the fifth game all season that the Lutes have been out shot offensively 12-7, but the first resulting in a win. PLU was 0-2-2 in prior games which they had been out shot.
Olson now leads the conference in goals at seven on the season and is the leading goal scorer for the Lutes. Olson also leads the NWC in game-winning goals as well.
Abby Winkler garnered the victory in goal notching all 90 minutes and totaling eight saves.
"She's (Olson) got good instincts in the box," Spidahl noted. "She's competitive and has a way of latching herself on to balls played in the box, which you can't teach."
Pacific Lutheran travels to Whitworth University tomorrow afternoon to play the Pirates with kick-off slated for 12 PM.
