PORTLAND, Ore. — One goal was all that was needed on Saturday afternoon,.as the eight-time Northwest Conference Champion Pacific Lutheran University women's soccer team maintained its perch atop the league standings with a 1-0 victory over Lewis & Clark College at Griswold Stadium.
Tia Schwetz provided the lone fireworks for the day, scoring unassisted in the 35th minute in what proved to be the game-winner. It's the sophomore's first collegiate goal. Schwetz got the ball from 35-yards out, spun, dribbled to the top of the box and floated a chip shot over the Pioneer keeper into the back post.
PLU's ironclad defense took it from there, allowing just one Pioneer shot in the second half to earn the team's second straight clean sheet and seventh shutout of the 2025 campaign.Â
"Tough game today. Lewis & Clark played really well and it's a tough field to play on. Not a lot of width and they're always a physical man-marking team," said Head Coach
Seth Spidahl.Â
"Proud of our team. We found a way to get a goal. We talked about people stepping up and getting their firsts, and Tia did just that.
Paige Almanza and
Jaden Saucelo made some really good impacts for our team and we continue to find players within our team that step up. We talked about it being a collective effort this year and done in groups with rotations and lots of people playing."
The Lutes (7-2-4, 7-0-2 NWC)Â finished the game with a 16-6 edge in shots, including seven of the eight chances in the second half. Lute keeper
Abby Winkler made four saves and played all 90 minutes while her counterpart, Anna Ingadottir, made three saves on the day for the Pioneers (2-8-3, 2-5-2 NWC).
The road trip continues for the Lutes on Sunday, facing George Fox University in Newberg, Oregon. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m.
