TACOMA, Wash. — The eight-time defending Northwest Conference Champion Pacific Lutheran University women's soccer team extended its shutout streak to 430 minutes on Wednesday afternoon and maintained its grip on the top spot in the conference standings, settling for a 0-0 stalemate with crosstown nemesis University of Puget Sound.
Its the Lutes' fourth straight shutout and extends the team's unbeaten streak to 11 matches. More importantly, the tie kept PLU (8-2-5, 8-0-3 NWC) in first place in the league standings with the Loggers (8-2-5, 7-0-4 NWC) still chasing the Lutes, sitting two points shy with five games remaining in the regular season.
The host Loggers outgunned the Lutes 14-2 on the day, including taking eight of the nine shots in the opening half. Despite that, PLU arguably had the best chance of the day with a
Liv Olson shot ricocheting off the top woodwork in the 75th minute.
Abby Winkler had another stellar day in net, going all 90 minutes and making five saves for her eighth shutout of the season. The shutout was the 27th of Winkler's career, moving into a tie for fifth place with Natalie Robinson (2015-2018) for fifth place on the all-time shutout list. UPS's Gianna Madonado made zeros saves to log the shutout, extending the Loggers' shutout streak to 244 minutes.
"I think we had a very good defensive performance today. Special shout out to
Katelyn McDougal,
Nahe Bukoski, and
Abby Winkler— exceptional down the middle of our defense," said Head Coach
Seth Spidahl.
"It was a typical mid October game against UPS late in the season on a Wednesday at noon away from home. We knew our attacking opportunities might be limited on the day but overall it was a fairly even game, I don't think the stats quite gave the evenness of the game justice. Certainly they had more chances than we did, but we dealt with everything great and at the end of the day we did what we needed to do.
We're in a good spot. We need to recover and finish out our mountain week strong on Sunday. Then there's just two weeks left where we just need to be the best team over the last five games with three at home."
The Lutes are back on the pitch on Sunday, hosting Willamette University at 12 p.m. at East Field.Â
