Women's Rowing Finishes Fall Season Strong on American Lake

Results

LAKEWOOD, Wash. — The Pacific Lutheran University women's rowing team wrapped up its fall racing slate on Saturday, winning one race and placing second in another at the Fall Fixture on American Lake.

"It was absolutely amazing today. We had a delay at the start of the day because of some really thick fog but thankfully it blew off and we were able to get on the water. Huge thanks to SPU and UPS for coming out. It's always good to have good friends in the Pacific Northwest and it was a great atmosphere today," said Head Coach Matt Oclander.

"Our varsity eight and varsity four went out there and showed our true colors and what we've been working on. The varsity eight had a really great race with an aggressive race plan. It's fun to see them grow and continue to learn."

The Lutes' varsity eight boat began the day with a runner-up finish, covering the two mile course in 11 minutes, 51.3 seconds, finishing over 15 seconds ahead of boathouse rival University of Puget Sound and trailing the winning crew from Division II Seattle Pacific University by just over six seconds.

Louisa Compton served as coxswain for the varsity eight boat with Riah Heil, Natalie Gregory, Adia Carei, Kennadi Jones, Kat Judd, Ashley Teague, Hannah Miyasaki, and Makayla Hall filling out the rest of the boat.

PLU's second varsity eight was sixth in the same race, crossing the line in 14:05.9 while the Lutes third varsity eight was seventh in an effort of 15:09.6.

Jilma Diaz-Demangue was coxswain for the 2V with a crew of Eryn Aston, Tate Trahan, Suzie Roberts, Adella Judge, Taylor Rubio, Mackenzie Poppe, Kate Dery, and Abby Andrews. The Lute 3V was Sydney Dumont, Sylvie Manz, Billie Roberts, Joscelyn Barenaba, Ember-Lynn Land, Juleana Salazar Sandoval, Tlalli Ruiz, and Skyler Putt with Kam Otteson serving as coxswain.

"Our 2V had some new people in new positions and it was fun to see them compete. It's always a blessing to have a 3V and have them out on the water and hanging with the rest of the crews. It's really fun to see the full Lute Armada out there racing together."

The Lutes' varsity four boat won its race later in the day, covering the two-mile distance in 12:55.5, enjoying a comfortable 37-second buffer on Seattle Pacific. PLU's second varsity four was sixth in 14:17.6 with the 3V checking in seventh overall in 16:12.4.

PLU winning varsity four consisted of Heil, Jones, Carei, and Hall with Compton serving as coxswain.

"Hats off to the varsity four that has picked up where it left off last year at the conference championship. They walked away from the field. Our coxswain Louisa took a really aggressive line at the turn and was able to make moves at the right time and it was able to get a bow ball ahead of SPU and UPS, which is always fun in a head race to get to pass another crew."

PLU closed the day with the novice eight boat racing and crossing the line in 14:31.3, finishing just short of a more experienced boat from SPU.

Saturday was the second and final race this fall for the Lutes. PLU begins the spring season at home on Match 7th, hosting the PLU Invitational on American Lake.
