Varsity Four Wins Race on American Lake

Results

LAKEWOOD, Wash. — The Pacific Lutheran University women's rowing team's varsity four boat earned a victory on Saturday but the Lutes' varsity eight was unable to wrestle away the Lamberth Cup from boathouse rival University of Puget Sound in the 47th edition of the storied showdown on American Lake.

The Loggers, ranked 14th in the most recent CRCA Poll, got out to an early lead in the varsity eight race for the Lamberth Cup. It's a lead UPS would never relinquish, covering the 2,000-meter course in seven minutes, 33 seconds. PLU's varsity eight of coxswain Louisa Compton and crew of  Adia Carei, Kennadi Jones, Riah Heil, Ashley Teague, Kat Judd, Maddie Anderson, Carleigh Templin, and Makayla Hall crossed the finish line 16.2 seconds later, clocking a time of 7:49.2.

"The Meyer-Lamberth Cup always brings tough and tight racing. Today was no exception, and it was another key step in building our season," said Head Coach Matt Oclander.

"We had two races filled with learning and gritty competition. In the eights race, both boats executed their race plans better than before, but we still need to sharpen our precision to reach the next level of speed. Credit to Puget Sound. Their varsity eight got out ahead and stayed ahead."

PLU's second varsity eight finished third in the same race, coming across the finish in 8:48.4. Sarah Hoskins was coxswain for the 2V with Sareena Dhaliwal, Sage Miller, Suzie Roberts, Tate Trahan, Miram Greer, Mackenzie Poppe, Sophia Pancoast, and Kaylyn Sanford filling out the rest of the vessel.

"I loved seeing the battle in our second eight in the first 500 meters."

The Lutes' varsity four blew away the field in the other race of the morning with winning by a decisive 45.7-second margin. Compton was coxswain for the winning boat with Heil, Jones, Carei, and Hall doing the heavy lifting.

"After the eights, half of our rowers immediately jumped into their fours, racing back-to-back without rest. Physically, that's a tough challenge, but they stayed mentally locked in. The varsity four took a commanding lead and didn't look back. The novice four had a really close race that was neck and neck until the last 300 meters, and I'm really proud of their second place finish."

PLU's novice four boat of coxswain Sylvie Manz and crew of Judd, Anderson, Dhaliwal, and Trahan, finish runner-up in 9:01.7 and enjoyed a 2.9-second margin on the third place finishing boat from Puget Sound.

The Lutes had a third boat entered in the race but an equipment issue kept the second varsity four from making it to the startline.

"Unfortunately, an equipment issue kept our third four from making it to the start line. However, they still got to get on the water after racing concluded alongside our alumnae four."

Saturday's varsity eight race was the 47th running of the Lamberth Cup, a trophy that dates to the 1977 season. It was the Loggers third straight triumph in a rivalry that's skewed 28-19 in favor of the Lutes.

After the racing, the Lutes honored the 2025 seniors who were racing for the final time on American Lake.

"We will miss our 2025 Seniors. They have been instrumental in helping and guiding this team during my first year. Carleigh Templin, our second year captain and longest tenured Lute, has done an amazing job being a leader on and off the water. She kept a lot of the traditions alive and provided critical continuity to the team. Sage Miller has done a great job all year balancing school while also preparing for a career in social work. She will be a wonderful asset to her community, and we are grateful for her contributions! Kaylyn Sanford has battled through injury and made it to today's race, her first. She's done an incredible job over her time on the team having an 'any seat, any day' mentality. We look forward to see her next steps as she looks forward to a career in criminal justice."

The Lutes are back on the water on Friday, racing on the East Coast in Brigantine, New Jersey against Stockton University.

"A huge thank you to our family, friends, supporters, and alumni who came out to cheer us on today! Special thanks to the football team and staff for joining us today and leading the charge with the oar tunnel to send off our eights!"
