HILLSBORO, Ore. --- Pacific Lutheran University's
Matthew Sherwood secured his first Athlete of the Week honor on Monday morning, as the Northwest Conference office tabbed the sophomore as the NWC Baseball Pitcher of the Week.

The Santa Clarita, California native is in his second season with the Lutes, and is 1-1 in his six appearances on the season. Over the last weekend, Sherwood made two appearances on the mound, most notably his two-inning save to help secure the Lutes 3-1 victory over the Division-I Washington Huskies at Husky Ballpark. He threw 32 pitches in the game, stranding a pair of hits while striking out two.

In his second appearance, he made the start at home against the Pacific Boxers, going four and two-thirds innings, allowing three runs on five hits, and striking out one. He earned a no-decision for the game.

Sherwood boasts a 6.59 career earned run average over 20 appearances in his young career, fanning 52 batters in 68.1 total innings on the bump.

Sherwood and the Lutes look to take on the cross-town rival Loggers on Tuesday afternoon, before heading to Salem, Ore. this weekend for a three-game series against the Willamette Bearcats.
