Tacoma, Wash.--- The Pacific Lutheran University Lutes women's soccer team opened up Northwest conference play with a 1-0 win over George Fox University on Saturday, September 20th at East Field.
Saturday's match marked the sixth straight win for the Lutes against the Bruins and the first win on the season after a tough non-conference schedule against some of the top teams in NCAA Division III.
"Every game in the Northwest Conference is tough," Head Coach
Seth Spidahl mentioned. "Every win that you can achieve is a well-deserved win. We were happy to get off to a start in that way and we know we still have a lot to work on and improve. We'll take this on game one, but we are looking forward to getting better in game two tomorrow and moving forward this season."
The visiting Bruins also entered today's game win less on the season, but have held opposing opponents to only two goals all season. PLU's offense out shot GFU 16-3 on the day with the lone goal coming from
Bella Hanna in the 16th minute off a set piece corner kick from
Kiana Gutierrez. The Lutes dominated offensively pouring in nine shots on goal and earning 10 corner kicks.
Abby Winkler earned the shutout in goal playing all 90 minutes and facing zero shots on goal. Winkler, the reigning NWC 1st-team all conference standout, notched her 20th shutout of her career.
The Lutes improve to 1-2-2 overall and 1-0 in NWC play. Pacific Lutheran will be back in action on East Field tomorrow, September 21st taking on another NWC opponent in the Lewis & Clark College Pioneers. Kick-off is set for a 12 PM start.
