TACOMA, Wash. — The Pacific Lutheran University Athletic Department hosted its annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day clinic earlier this month, recommitting to its core values of service and unity in bringing together over 100 participants and volunteers.

Over 60 girls from grades first through six along with 40 volunteers from various PLU athletic teams participated, rotating through stations covering the sports of dance, flag football, lacrosse, soccer, softball, track & field, and volleyball during the two-hour clinic on Feb. 7.

"The sports clinics are something I love to be a part of. The girls' clinic is extra special to me. This clinic allows us to encourage young girls to pursue sports and athletics and show them that they have a place in the sports world," said women's lacrosse student-athlete Kassie Diller.

Participants at the free clinic later attended PLU's men's and women's basketball doubleheader at the conclusion of the event. Every attendee received a t-shirt and a free ball for participating.

"It was a great experience! It was fun to see kids compete and try out new sports. It reminded me of when I was younger and learned the true meaning of sports: you don't have to be perfect, just try your best and have fun!" said women's soccer student-athlete Kelan Betts.

The NGWSD Clinic is one of several free community events the PLU Athletic Department coordinates throughout the year, including the PLU Fall Youth Sports Clinic, the Special Olympics Basketball Clinic, and the PLU Spring Youth Sports Clinic.
