Spencer Augustin had a knack for scoring, putting together one of the most prolific single seasons in PLU history to guide the Lutes to the program's first ever trip to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
"I decided to attend PLU because of their track record of getting students placed into medical school, the opportunity to continue my soccer career, and getting to stay close to home," said Augustin.
Augustin didn't take long to make an impact for the Lutes, playing in 18 games and scoring three goals with one assist as a first-year in 2008.
The Anchorage, Alaska native played all 19 games the following season, starting 17 and scoring across eight different games. Augustin was a Second Team All-Northwest Conference selection as a sophomore in 2009, scoring nine goals with five assists. Augustin tallied the overtime game-winner in a 2-1 road win over Linfield College on Sept. 20 while piling on two goals and one assist in a 5-2 victory over the Wildcats the following month.
Augustin scored four goals and had four assists as a junior in 2010, starting all 16 games he appeared in for the Lutes. His efforts helped PLU lead the conference in scoring, averaging 2.37 per game and racking up 45 goals over the 19-game season.
The Alaskan saved his best for last, mounting one of the greatest single seasons in school history as a senior in 2011. Named First Team All-NWC and the NWC Offensive Player of the Year, Augustin averaged a goal a game, finishing the year with 19 goals and eight assists. His 46 points shattered a school single season record that had stood since 1981, helping the Lutes set school records for wins, capture the NWC title, and qualify for the NCAA Division III Tournament for the first time in school history.
Augustin was a three-time NWC Player of the Week in 2011 and led the Far West Region in goals, goals per game, points, and points per game. The forward scored an overtime game winner on the road over 13th-ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater to begin the season and provided an overtime winner on Oct. 2 in a 2-1 victory over defending NWC Champion Pacific University. Arguably his greatest effort was against Linfield, pouring on four goals in a road win over the Wildcats on Oct. 23.
He finished the season as a Second Team CoSIDA Academic All-American, a First Team CoSIDA Academic All-District selection, and earned Second Team NSCAA All-Far West Region honors. Augustin concluded the season ranked seventh in all of NCAA Division III in points per game and was eighth nationally in goals per game, ninth in total goals, and 11th in total points.
Augustin's single season points record stood until the 2023 season and still sits third all-time in school history. Augustin's 35 career goals and 88 total points still rank eighth all-time in program history as he helped build the Lutes into a regional power that since 2011 has now made eight trips to the NCAA Tournament.
Two individuals on campus who had an outsized impact on Augustin were Professor Tom Carlson and Head Coach
John Yorke.
He'd go on to graduate in 2012 with a degree in biology before attending medical school at Pacific Northwest University. Augustin is now a child and adolescent psychiatrist, owning Alpenglow Behavioral Health. Augustin and his wife Erin have two children— Blake and Lex.
