Thomas Shines in Fall Opener

Results

DUPONT, Wash. — Jayda Thomas continued where she left off last season, placing inside the Top 10 against an international field on Tuesday to lead the Pacific Lutheran University women's golf squad at the season-opening Grisham Memorial Shootout.

The Lutes placed 12th as a team at the event hosted by Saint Martin's University at The Home Course.

Thomas paced the Lutes, finishing eight strokes off medalist honors and just two strokes shy of cracking the top five. The senior tied for seventh overall, shooting a 148 after carding identical 74s in Monday's opening round and Tuesday's final round. Thomas had three birdies and 12 pars during round one while netting four birdies and nine pars during round two, including shooting a three-under during the back nine of Tuesday's round.

Mari Morris shot a 175 in her Lute debut, placing 60th overall. Morris shot a 91 during round one before shaving off seven strokes with an 84 on Tuesday.

SeRi Park was three strokes back in 64th with a 178. Park shot an 87 on Monday before closing the tourney with a 91. Kathleen Pullin was 66th with a 182, shooting 91s both days while Kate Sabarillo was two strokes back with a 184. Sabarillo shot a 95 on Monday before carving off six strokes on Tuesday, carding an 89.

"Jayda was amazing! Her ball striking is as good as any player in the field and I'm expecting big things from her this season!," said Head Coach Al Patterson.

"Mari proved her athletic swing will be producing great things for us this season and we're very happy with her 84 in the second round. SeRi Park also shows promise! She's steady off the tee and plays a smart game! I feel good about our team going into the PLU Invitational. This tournament had mostly Division II schools so it will be nice to play against Division III schools at our home event."

Pacific Lutheran tallied a team score of 681, finishing 21-strokes behind Canada's University of Fraser Valley. The Lutes shot a 343 on Monday before finishing the tourney strong with a 338 on Tuesday. NAIA Oregon Institute of Technology and Division II Seattle Pacific University tied for the top, both shooting a 591 with OIT winning the overall title on tiebreakers. Host Saint Martin's University placed 10th overall in a strong field that included seven Division II institutions.

SPU's Emma Worgum won medalist honors, shooting 70s both days to finish with a score of 140.

The Lutes return to The Home Course next Monday, hosting the PLU Invitational.
