PARKLAND- The Pacific Lutheran men's soccer team got it's first
win of the season in high fashion, winning 6-1 over the visiting
Trinity Lutheran University Eagles. Chad Kearns led PLU with
four goals in the win.
For the second straight day, Kearns struck within the first five
minutes of the game, slotting his first of four goals into the back
of the net after just four minutes. The Eagles, however,
responded with a goal of their own four minutes later through
Reymundo Miranda. The Lutes kept the back-and-forth start
going with another Kearns goal at 8:32, his fourth of the season.
Both of Kearns' first two goals came off of assists by Surafel
Wodajo.
Kearns continued his monumental day by scoring two more on the
day, coming at 23:47 and 65:08 to make the score 4-1 midway through
the second half. Giancarlo Santoro, a freshman from
Sammamish, picked up his first goal of the season when he recieved
a Stephen Gooding pass and took on three Eagles defenders on the
endline and passed the ball sweetly into the net to take the score
to 5-1. Gooding got in on the scoring as well after
connecting onto a perfectly weighted through ball from Derek
Johnson and beating the keeper from 20 yards out.
The last time the Lutes had scored six goals in a match came in
2008 when they defeated St. Mary's (Minn.), 6-2. The Lute
goalkeepers for the day, Brian Kostol and Joe Rayburn, faced a
total of five shots, two on goal, and were forced into only one
save.
Kearns becomes the first player to score more than three goals
in a match since Andy McDirmid set the school record with six goals
against Linfield in 1992.
The Lutes host Willamette and Linfield next weekend in the start
of the Northwest Conference schedule.
