PARKLAND – Three unanswered goals for Pacific Lutheran gave the Lutes a 3-1 comeback victory over visiting George Fox Saturday afternoon in Northwest Conference women's soccer action.
Pacific Lutheran improves to 7-3-5 overall and 5-1-5 in conference play, while George Fox falls to 3-11-1 overall and 1-9-1 in the NWC. PLU's seven wins are the program's most since the 2006 team won 11. The Lutes return to the pitch Sunday at 12 p.m., hosting a Lewis & Clark team that is one point behind PLU in the NWC standings.
"It was a good game today," PLU head coach Seth Spidahl said. "We had to actually come from behind today, but I was really proud of our team to come back and win 3-1 because it's not always easy to do that; soccer can be a hard game to score."
Hannah Harder gave George Fox the early lead, scoring in the 12th minute of play off a corner kick pass from Michelle Young in front of the goal. That proved to be one of only three shot attempts by the Bruins in the game, with all coming in the first half. PLU out-shot the Bruins 15-to-0 in the second half and finished the match with a 21-3 shot advantage.
The Lutes tied it up later in the first period, when senior defender Kristi D'Alessandro took a pass from Kaylie Rozell on the right side of the field and dropped it into the net for her first goal of the season. That score made it even going into the halftime break.
"I was really excited about that goal," D'Alessandro said. "It was my first one, so hopefully there are more to come. I think we responded well by going down one and winning 3-1."
Alex Murray picked up the eventual game-winner less than three minutes into the second period, as Lena Moreno passed it to Murray following a corner kick and the senior midfielder popped it in from a few yards out. Emma Wayerski's first goal of the season gave PLU a two-score cushion in the 85th minute. Wayerski had three consecutive shot attempts from the box, with the first two blocked by defenders before her third attempt found its way into the net.
