It's a Draw for PLU Women's Soccer Against Whitworth

PARKLAND – The Pacific Lutheran women's soccer team found itself in double-overtime for the fourth time in its past five matches, as 110 minutes of play yielded zero goals for either the Lutes or the visiting Pirates in Northwest Conference action Saturday afternoon.

Pacific Lutheran's third tie of the season pushes the Lutes' record to 4-2-3 overall and 2-0-3 in conference play. Whitworth goes to 5-4-2 overall and 2-3-2 in the NWC. The Lutes return to action Sunday, hosting Whitman at 12 p.m.

"I thought we played really well today," senior forward Samantha Benner said. "That's the best we've ever played against Whitworth. We played really solid defense and we kept really good possession. It's a frustrating result, but we play them again, so hopefully we can come back and win next time."

The Lutes maintained possession for the majority of the game, compiling 22 shot attempts to only six for the Pirates. PLU also finished the match with a 10-3 corner kick advantage. But with Whitworth goalkeeper Andrea Stump going the distance and making eight saves for the Pirates, the Lutes just couldn't quite break through for a goal.

"Whitworth is always a fun game for us," senior defender Mariah Rasmussen said. "It's always super competitive and we always really want to beat them. We did everything but score today, so we'll look forward to them next time."

Marisa Gonzalez played the first half in goal for PLU, while Takara Mitsui took over at halftime and played the final 65 meetings. The duo combined to make four saves, and PLU's leading scorer Kaylie Rozell finished with match-high totals in both shots (5) and shots on goal (4).
