Lutes extend win streak to six with 1-0 win over Linfield

PARKLAND – Pacific Lutheran's sixth consecutive victory tied the Lutes' longest win streak in 20 years as PLU defeated Linfield 1-0 in Northwest Conference women's soccer action Saturday afternoon.

With the win, Pacific Lutheran improved to 8-2-1 overall and 6-1 in conference play, while Linfield falls to 7-3 overall and 4-3 in the NWC. The Lutes return to action Sunday, when they will host Willamette at 12 p.m.

Emily Hanna put PLU on the board in the 27th minute of play, scoring her first goal of the season when she shot from about 10 yards out from the right and sent it across the net into the left side to give PLU a 1-0 lead. That proved to be the difference in the match, as the PLU defense stifled a Linfield offense led by two-time defending NWC Offensive Player of the Year and current scoring leader Emily Fellows.

Each team finished the first half with five shots, but the Linfield offense put pressure on PLU in the second half with 10 shots in the period, including five on goal. Lute goalkeeper Takara Mitsui, the reigning NWC Defensive Student-Athlete of the Week, finished with six saves as she earned her sixth shutout of the year.

For the day, Linfield finished with a 15-6 shot advantage and a 6-2 advantage in shots on goal. Laurel Huth made one save while playing all 90 minutes in goal for the Wildcats, allowing only Hanna's goal. PLU's six-match win streak matches the six-win streak of the 1994 PLU squad, and the Lutes' 8-2-1 record is the program's best 11-match mark since 1995.
