PARKLAND – Pacific Lutheran scored first, but Whitman became the first team to tally multiple goals against the 25th-ranked Lutes as the Missionaries pulled out a 2-1 comeback win in Northwest Conference women's soccer action Saturday afternoon.
PLU sees its seven-match win streak and five-match shutout streak come to a loss as the Lutes fall to 9-3-1 overall and 7-2 in conference play, while Whitman improves to 7-5-2 overall and 5-3-2 in the NWC. The Lutes return to action Sunday, when they will host Whitworth at 12 p.m. with Senior Day festivities beginning 15 minutes prior to kickoff.
Kaylie Rozell got PLU on the board early, taking a pass from Kelsey Hathaway and knocking it in fom 10 yards out for her fourth goal of the season in the 12th minute of play. PLU held the lead until late in the first period, with Clara Merlino passing to Lena de Guzman 12 yards out for the tying score in the 39th minute.
That same duo came through for Whitman in the second half, as Merlino found de Guzman in the center of the field for an 18-yarder in the 52nd minute. PLU continued to put pressure on the Missionary defense, out-shooting Whitman 10-3 in the second half and 16-7 overall, but Whitman goalkeeper Haley Case finished the day with seven saves to preserve the win for the visitors.
Rozell ended the day with eight of PLU's 16 shots, including a pair on goal, while Machaela Graddy added three on-goal shots in the loss. Takara Mitsui saved a pair of shots to go with the two goals allowed.
With 21 points, PLU is now tied atop the NWC standings with cross-town rival Puget Sound and Linfield. UPS holds the tiebreaker due to a 1-0 win over the Lutes earlier this season, while Linfield has played one more match than the other two and has lost to both UPS and PLU.
