PARKLAND – The 25th-ranked Pacific Lutheran women's soccer team celebrated Senior Day with a bounce-back 2-0 Northwest Conference victory against Whitworth Sunday afternoon.
Pacific Lutheran recorded its sixth shutout in its last seven matches, responding to a 2-1 home loss to Whitman on Saturday with the win on Sunday to improve to 10-3-1 overall and 8-2 in conference play. The Lutes' 24 points ties cross-town rival Puget Sound for first place in the NWC with six matches remaining in the regular season.
Kaylie Rozell put PLU on the board in the 34th minute, scoring her fifth goal of the season off a corner kick by Lena Moreno to give the Lutes the 1-0 advantage. Machaela Graddy put it away in the 80th minute when she took the ball off a defender and beat Whitworth goalkeeper Andrea Stump for an open shot into the net and her fourth goal of the year.
The Lutes peppered the Whitworth goal with shot attempts all day, finishing with a 16-4 shot advantage and forcing Stump to make eight saves. PLU keeper Takara Mitsui made one save while earning her eighth shutout of the season.
Prior to kickoff, the Lutes honored seniors Hannah Bush and Blake Warner in a Senior Day ceremony. The two seniors have played four years at PLU, helping the Lutes improve their win totals each season from four in 2011 to six in 2012 and 11 in 2013. PLU has a chance to surpass that win total this season as the Lutes already have 10 wins with at six matches remaining on the regular season schedule.
The loss dropped Whitworth's record to 4-10-1 overall and 3-8 in conference play. Pacific Lutheran returns to action next weekend, traveling to Oregon to take on George Fox on Saturday and Lewis & Clark on Sunday. Both matches are set to kick off at 12 p.m.
