NEWBERG, Ore. – Battling wind and rain throughout the match, the Pacific Lutheran women's soccer team broke through in the 89th minute of play as Blake Warner found the net to give the Lutes a 1-0 Northwest Conference road victory over George Fox Saturday afternoon.
PLU out-shot George Fox 14-4 in the contest and forced Bruins goalkeeper Ally Swanson to make six saves, but the hosts kept the Lutes off the board until the closing minutes of regulation. Warner took a pass from Jamie Hoffman and knocked it in with just over one minute remaining on the scoreboard.
"Today was a battle," PLU head coach Seth Spidahl said. "We knew George Fox was playing with confidence at home. It was a windy, rainy day, so we also had the conditions to deal with. We kept at it and were fortunate enough that Blake finished one of our chances."
The Lutes improved to 11-3-1 overall and 9-2 in Northwest Conference play while maintaining their position tied atop the conference standings. With five matches remaining in the regular season, PLU's next win would give the Lutes their most victories since 1995. George Fox, which had won three of its past four matches, fell to 3-9-3 overall and 3-7-1 in conference play with the loss.
Warner led the Lutes with two shots on goal out of her three shots on the day, while Kaylie Rozell tallied a game-high four shots. Takara Mitsui made two saves while earning her ninth shutout of the season, the most for a PLU goalkeeper since 1993.
The Lutes return to action Sunday, when they will take on Lewis & Clark in Portland. PLU and Lewis & Clark have played five consecutive double-overtime matches, with the Lutes winning the last three. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m.
