Box Score PARKLAND – Wet, windy weather governed the flow of the match, but the Pacific Lutheran offense peppered the Linfield goal with shot attempts in the second half and the Lutes prevailed 1-0 in Northwest Conference women's soccer action Saturday afternoon.
Pacific Lutheran improved to 9-1-1 overall and 5-1-1 in conference play, while Linfield fell to 6-3-1 overall and 3-3-1 in the NWC. The Wildcats built a 6-3 shot advantage in the first period, but PLU turned the tables after halftime with a 15-2 shot advantage to finish the day up 18-8.
All of that pressure proved fruitful for the Lutes at the 58-minute mark when Machaela Graddy scored her sixth goal of the season from inside the 6-yard box off a pass from Jamie Hoffman. That proved to be the game-winner as PLU clinched its fourth straight shutout and ninth overall shutout this season.
"It was a game of two halves today with the wind," PLU head coach Seth Spidahl said. "We wanted to finish the game with the wind at our back. Linfield was on top of us for a lot of the first half, but we defended well and held strong. In the second half we created a lot of possessions deep in our attacking half, and Mac stepped up to score a good goal that ended up deciding the game."
Graddy and Kelsey Hathaway each finished the day with three shots, while Hoffman led the team with four shot attempts. Takara Mitsui made four saves while earning her ninth shutout of the season, one away from her total of 10 last season. With 19 career shutouts, she already ranks fourth all-time in PLU history.
PLU has now won five straight matches and has not allowed a goal in nearly 450 minutes of play since Lewis & Clark scored in the first 10 minutes against PLU on Sept. 20 in a match the Lutes eventually won 3-1. They'll look to extend that streak Sunday, when they conclude the first half of the Northwest Conference 2015 schedule against Pacific. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m.
