Lutes fall 9-0 to George Fox in NWC home opener

TACOMA – The Pacific Lutheran men's tennis team played its first Northwest Conference home match of the 2015 season Saturday afternoon, as the Lutes fell to George Fox 9-0 at Sprinker Recreation Center.

Pacific Lutheran falls to 1-3 overall and 1-2 in conference play, while George Fox improves to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in the NWC. The Lutes return to action Sunday, when they will host Pacific at 10:30 a.m. at Sprinker.

"We played a really strong team today," PLU head coach John Cassens. "Alberto came out really strong, and our team was battling some injuries and sickness today."

Alberto Leal picked up the Lutes' lone set win of the day in the singles round, taking the first set against Nicholas Grafton 6-1 before falling 6-1 in consecutive sets. Sam Stadter fell to Chris Lilley 6-4, 6-2 at the top of the ladder, while Andrew You defeated James Okubo 6-1, 6-3.

Spencer Watanabe took down Noel Oteng-Mensah 6-0, 6-1 in the third singles match. Jeremy Marsh fell 6-2, 6-3 to Viloria Vincent in the fifth match, and Chris Erkkila fell to Mitchell Miyahsiro 6-1, 6-0.

The doubles round saw Marsh and Oteng-Mensah put up the biggest fight, as they fell to Lilley and Chace Stalcup 8-6 in the second match. You and Watanabe defeated Stadter and Okubo 8-3 in the first match, and Grafton and Viloria defeated Erkkila and Leal 8-0 in the third match.
