TACOMA – The Pacific Lutheran men's tennis team wrapped up its first weekend of home competition on Sunday, falling 9-0 to Pacific in a Northwest Conference match at Sprinker Recreation Center.
Pacific Lutheran falls to 1-4 overall and 1-3 in conference play, while Pacific improves to 4-1 overall and 3-1 in the NWC. The Lutes travel to Oregon next weekend to take on Willamette on Saturday before returning home Sunday to host 13th-ranked Whitman.
Pacific opened the day by taking all three doubles matches. Brennan Faith and Grayson Frazier teamed to defeat Sam Stadter and James Okubo 8-4 in the number one match. Clark Wininger and Oscar Wight defeated Jeremy Marsh and Noel Oteng-Mensah 8-0 in the second match, and Josh Bernstein and Reuben Mulhern defeated Chris Erkkila and Alberto Leal 8-1 in the third match.
The Boxers took all six singles matches as well. Giancarlo Battaglia took down Stadter 6-1, 6-2 at the top of the ladder, and Faith defeated Okubo 6-1, 6-4 in the second match. Wininger defeated Oteng-Mensah 6-3, 6-0 at number three, while Wight beat Leal 6-1, 6-2 at number four. Sage Katayama knocked off Marsh 6-2, 6-2 at number five, and Ben Ryweck defeated Erkkila 6-2, 6-3 at number six.
"It was a tough end to the weekend, but the team fought hard," PLU head coach John Cassens said. "We're looking forward to getting healthy."
