Lutes clinch season sweep of Linfield with 8-1 win

TACOMA – The Pacific Lutheran men's tennis team closed out a season sweep of Linfield Saturday afternoon, defeating the Wildcats 8-1 in Northwest Conference action at Sprinker Recreation Center.

With the win, PLU improved to 4-11 overall and 4-5 in conference play this season. Linfield fell to 1-10 overall and 1-8 in the NWC. The Lutes host cross-town rival Puget Sound Sunday at 10:30 a.m. and will honor seniors Sam Angel and Chris Erkkila in a pregame Senior Day ceremony.

"It was a great win today," PLU head coach John Cassens said. "Our doubles took the pressure off the singles."

Those doubles may have eased the pressure, but it did not come easy. Pacific Lutheran swept all three doubles matches, but each was close and two took extra points. Sam Stadter and Angel teamed to defeat Kelsey Rosborough and Lukas Kleinman 9-7 in the first match. Noel Oteng-Mensah and Jeremy Marsh took down Micah Roos and Ben McNair 9-8, and James Okubo and Erkkila closed out the sweep with an 8-6 win over Ben Brewer and Joel Trousdale.

The Lutes came one match away fro also sweeping the singles round. Stadter took down McNair 6-1, 6-0 at the top of the ladder, while Angel knocked off Kleinman 6-2, 6-2. Okubo defeated Rosborough 6-4, 6-3, and Oteng-Mensah defeated Trousdale 6-4, 6-2. Marsh knocked off Roos 6-4, 7-5 to pick up the Lutes' final win of the day, before Liam Spearniak picked up the Wildcats' lone win with a 6-3, 6-3 win over John Woelfel.
