TACOMA – Pacific Lutheran honored its seniors and claimed its third straight win as the Lutes defeated cross-town rival Puget Sound 7-2 in a Northwest Conference men's tennis match Sunday at Sprinker Recreation Center.
The win improved PLU's record to 5-11 overall and 5-5 in conference play, while Puget Sound falls to 1-10 overall and 0-10 in the NWC. PLU recognized seniors Sam Angel and Chris Erkkila prior to the match, as they played their final home matches for the Lutes and extended PLU's win streak to 46 in a row against the cross-town rival Loggers.
"It was a great Senior Day," PLU head coach John Cassens said. "Sam Angel won both of his matches, while Chris Erkkila won his doubles match and Sam Stadter avenged his match from last week."
Pacific Lutheran began the day with a doubles sweep of the Loggers. Angel and Stadter teamed to defeat Joe McRoberts and Andrew Struzenberg 8-6 in the first match, while Noel Oteng-Mensah and Jeremy Marsh knocked off Daniel Deuel and Abe Noyes 8-2. Erkkila and James Okubo closed out the opening-round sweep with an 8-6 win over Jacob Kompolt and Chet Selis.
Stadter won a three-set singles match over McRoberts, shaking off a 6-4 opening-set loss to win the next two 6-1 and 6-4 at the top of the ladder. Angel followed with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Colton Wright. Deuel picked up the first win of the day for the Loggers, defeating Okubo 6-2, 6-0 in the third match. Oteng-Mensah picked up a 6-0, 7-5 win over Noyes, while Marsh defeated Struzenberg 6-2, 6-3. Kompolt outlasted Erkkila in the final match 3-6, 7-6, 1-0 (10-7).
PLU wraps up the 2015 season on the road next weekend, taking on Whitman on April 18 at 1 p.m. before visiting Whitworth on April 19 at 10 a.m.
