VANCOUVER, Wash. – The Pacific Lutheran men's tennis team closed out its weekend road trip Sunday afternoon against George Fox, falling 9-0 to the Bruins in Northwest Conference action.
Chan Thourk and Justin deMattos gave the Lutes their closest matchup in the doubles round, falling 8-3 to Mitchell Miyashiro and Tristen Lerma in the third match. Jeremy Marsh and DJ Pekoc fell 8-2 to Nicholas Grafton and Vincent Viloria in the second match, while James Okubo and Noel Oteng-Mensah fell 8-0 to Spencer Watanabe and Chris Lilley in the first match.
In singles play Watanabe defeated Okubo 6-0, 6-0 at the top of the lineup, while Lilley defeated Marsh 6-0, 6-0 in the second match. Oteng-Mensah pushed Grafton to extra points in the third slot before falling 6-2, 7-6 (7-4), and deMattos fell 6-3, 6-1 to Miyashiro in the fourth match. Pekoc won his first set against Nick Ekern 6-4 in the fourth singles match, but Ekern bounced back to win the second set 6-4 and claim a 10-5 tiebreaker. Thourk wrapped up the match against Lerma, falling 6-3, 6-2 in the sixth singles match.
"DJ played extremely well," PLU head coach John Cassens said. "And they have some very tough players at one and two. Our practice this week will focus on consistent play and doubles play."
PLU has a pair of short trips next weekend, as the Lutes visit cross-town rival Puget Sound Saturday at 12 p.m. and visit Seattle University Sunday at 1 p.m.
