TACOMA, Wash. - The Pacific Lutheran University men's tennis team secured victories in the top three singles matches but was unable to replicate the depth of visiting Whitworth University, faltering 6-3 in a Northwest Conference dual on Friday evening at the Lakewood Racket Club.
The Lutes' (3-11, 3-7 NWC) bested the Pirates' (3-11, 3-6 NWC) Shane Sandlin, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 1 singles while Niko Convento encountered little resistance in a, 6-1, 6-0, win at No. 2 singles. James Okubo secured PLU's third singles win of the afternoon, besting Ian Fisher by a, 6-4, 6-1, scoreline.
Okubo and Adams suffered an 8-3 setback at No. 1 doubles while Convento and Justin DeMattos were unhinged by an identical 8-3 scoreline at No. 2 as Whitworth secured a sweep of all three doubles matches.
"The top three played well against a tough opponent and we're looking forward to facing the same team tomorrow afternoon," said Head Coach John Cassens.
The Lutes and Pirates will meet again on Saturday with a dual match beginning at 1 p.m. at the Lakewood Racket Club.
