Box Score ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Pacific Lutheran University men's soccer team evened its record at 2-2 in a big way on Sunday morning. Led by freshman
Zak Gregg who recorded his first career hat trick, the Lute offense scored eight times, while the defense allowed just one shot on goal in an 8-0 dismantling of Fontbonne University.
"Today was a great response to our Friday night loss," said PLU Head Coach
John Yorke. "The guys came to the game today with intent and really improved on some of the things that we addressed after our last game. There has been a lot of growth in our group this weekend."
The eight goals on Sunday were the most by a PLU team since the Lutes scored eight times against George Fox University on November 1, 2015. The Griffins held the visitors off the scoreboard for the first 22 minutes, but then PLU struck three times in the next seven minutes.
Jackson Moore opened the scoring on an assist by
Zachary Manao. Then, it was Gregg's turn as he scored two times in the span of three minutes.
The Lutes weren't satisfied with just a 3-0 halftime lead as they added five more second-half goals. Manao found
Keeton Heggerness in the 54
thminute to make it 4-0 and Gregg scored for the third time about 80 seconds later. Heggerness assisted on Gregg's goal and assisted on Moore's second tally in the 56
thminute.
Freshmen
Dane Helle and
Alex White finished off the scoring with their first career goals in a Lute uniform. Manao's three assists on the day are just one short of the PLU single-game record of four, last done by Erik Gracey against George Fox in 2007.
Not to be outdone, the Lute defense allowed just one shot on goal that was saved by keeper
Tyler Ohata. Ohata and
Cole Weaver combined to pitch the second shutout of the year for PLU.
The Lutes will remain on the road next weekend when they head to Santa Cruz, Calif. to take on the University of California, Santa Cruz and Chapman University.
