Henderson Promoted to Head Track & Field Coach

TACOMA, Wash. — The Pacific Lutheran University men's and women's track & field program announced the restructuring of its coaching staff with Trey Henderson promoted to Head Coach, replacing Adam Frye who will remain on staff as the Head Cross Country Coach.

"Trey has been a tremendous asset to the department the past five seasons. His passion and commitment to the student-athlete experience is unmatched, and his track record as a coach speaks for itself, having coached multiple conference and national champions," said Athletic Director Mike Snyder.

"I can't thank Adam enough for what he's done to elevate the track & field program at PLU over the last six seasons. While he's stepping away from the track & field side, we're excited to retain Adam as the head cross country coach. It's a move that will elevate the student-athlete experience for both programs as we continue to compete for championships within the Northwest Conference and at the national level."

Henderson joined the PLU staff in 2018 as the throws coach while also serving as an assistant coach for the football team. In his five years on staff, Henderson has coached two national champions, six All-Americans, and eight Northwest Conference Champions. That includes boasting three conference champions this spring at the 2022 NWC Championships and coaching 2022 javelin national champion Ava Nelson.

"I'm incredibly grateful to be stepping into this new role leading the PLU Track & Field programs. Thank you to Mike Snyder for giving me this opportunity," said Henderson.

"Over the last several years both the men's and women's track & field programs have established a standard of excellence both in the classroom and on the track. I'm excited about taking on the challenge of continuing to elevate the standards and culture that Coach Adam Frye established the past six years. We have incredibly special student-athletes here at PLU, and I will work as hard as possible to provide them with the best environment to maximize their personal and athletic potential."

Henderson will remain on staff with the football team this fall. Last season, Henderson helped the PLU defense rank ninth nationally in sacks, 13th in interceptions, 19th in turnovers, and 23rd in turnover margin.

Frye steps down after six seasons at the helm of the track & field programs. Under his watch, the Lutes have won four individual national titles, 32 NWC individual titles, while earning 13 All-American honors. The women's track & field program was runner-up at the NWC Championships in both 2022 and 2021 while finishing ninth in the nation in 2021, PLU's highest finish at the NCAA Championships since 1999. PLU finished 15th in 2018 and was 12th this spring. Frye's men's track & field program was runner-up at the NWC Championships in both 2022 and 2018.

"It's been truly special leading the PLU Track & Field program the last six years. I'm so grateful for the opportunity to work with such an amazing group of student-athletes and staff," said Frye.

"I'm excited to pass the baton to Trey and see the program continue to flourish. Trey has been tremendous as a throws coach the last five years and I look forward to seeing him apply his skills to the head coach role."

As the cross country coach, Frye helped the men's program win the NWC title in 2018 while logging runner-up finishes in 2016, 2017, 2019, and 2021. Frye guided the Lutes to a fifth place finish at the West Region Championships in 2017 and has coached three of the last five NWC Champions in addition to two All-Americans. As women's coach, Frye guided the Lutes in 2019 to their best finish at the West Region Championships in 17 years, placing 10th overall.

"I'm excited to focus on leading the cross country program and also provide support to Trey and the student-athletes through the transition."

The Lutes finished second at the NWC Championships this spring in both men's track & field and women's track & field. PLU sent six student-athletes to the 2022 NCAA Championships, finishing with one national champion and four All-Americans.
