MOSCOW, Idaho — Jason Montes scored a baker's dozen off the bench on Friday night to lead the Pacific Lutheran University men's basketball team in an exhibition game against Division I University of Idaho inside ICCU Arena. Montes was one of 12 Lutes to see action in a game the host Vandals won 96-52.
"It's always fun to play in these types of atmospheres. We try, and it's difficult to do, to not focus on the score and the outcome and just focus on our processes and what will help us down the road," said Head Coach
Chad Murray.
"There were a few segments in the game where I thought we competed hard and did some nice things. There were others where I think we could've been better from a physical and mental standpoint."
The host Vandals (2-2) hit five of their first six shots on the night and tallied the opening 13 points of the game. Idaho never looked back, enjoying a 41-23 halftime advantage en route to the win.
Montes finished four-for-six from the field and a perfect four-for-four from the charity stripe to lead the Lutes (2-0) with 13 points.
Brandin Riedel added nine points and seven rebounds while
Ashton Rico had eight points and
Sam Noland had seven. Nine of PLU's 12 players who saw court time, scored against the Big Sky Conference school.
"We're grateful to have the opportunity to compete against an up and coming D1 team and play in a first class arena and environment. We'll take some lessons from this game and apply them to our upcoming opponents. These are important trips that help contribute to a great overall experience for our players."
The Lutes are off until after the Thanksgiving holiday, resuming the regular season on Nov. 25 in Portland against Warner Pacific University.
