Day 2 Recap

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. –  Jessica Ordaz stepped atop the podium for the second straight day on Saturday, winning the 100-yard butterfly to headline the Pacific Lutheran University women's swimming team's efforts on day three of the 2024 Northwest Conference Championships at the King County Aquatic Center.

Ordaz set the tone in the 100-yard butterfly preliminaries, swimming the fastest qualifying time of 56.46 seconds. The senior was even better in the finals, winning the event for the second time in her career with an NCAA B cut time of 55.83. It was the Los Angeles native's ninth career NWC title, and the second in as many days after being a part of the Lutes' winning 400-yard medley relay team last night. Ordaz previously won the 100 fly during the 2022 season before taking last season off.

Ordaz wasn't the only Lute to impress in the 100-yard fly with Annika Eisele and Riley Maher both bagging All-Conference honors in the event. Eisele finished sixth overall in 58.39 while Maher was seventh in 58.51. Sidney Chan-Orcutt was fourth in the B finals, finishing 12th overall in 1:00.54.

Makenzie Chan-Orcutt earned All-League status in the 100-yard breaststroke, placing eighth overall in 1:06.96 while Anna Matisons was 12th in 1:09.73.

Eisele, Emma Gassman, and Ordaz all earned All-Conference laurels in the 100-yard backstroke. Eisele paved the way with a third place showing in 58.74 with Gassman fourth (59.25) and Ordaz fifth (59.26).

The Lute women finished the night with a fourth place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay, finishing one place off All-Conference honors. PLU touched the wall in 1:39.79, finishing just over a second behind Linfield University.

"The Lute Train was absolutely steamrolling tonight with our performances. From the moment they stepped on the pool deck, they were dialed in and rocked the house with their energy, bravado, and undying commitment to one another. They've truly lived up to the motto: 'NEVER BACK DOWN, NEVER WHAT? NEVER GIVE UP!'" said Head Coach Andrew Lum.

"Jessica's victory in the 100 Fly was a highlight of many beautiful moments for the Lutes tonight. It's a scary, and exciting feeling knowing what's in store for them tomorrow."

Pacific Lutheran maintained its position in the team standings, remaining fourth overall with 269 points. The Lutes currently sit 20 points behind crosstown nemesis University of Puget Sound and own a razor-thin four-point edge on Whitworth University. Whitman College sits atop the standings with 406.5 points while Linfield is second with 338.

The Lutes are back in the pool tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. for the final day of the 2024 NWC Championships.
