FEDERAL WAY, Wash. — Emma Gassman tallied a pair of top four finishes on Sunday, including a second place finish in the 200-yard backstroke, powering the Pacific Lutheran University women's swimming team to a sixth place showing at the 2025 Northwest Conference Championships at the King County Aquatic Center.
The Lutes finished the four day meet with 281 points, securing sixth by a 52-point margin over seventh place George Fox University. Whitworth University won the team title for the first time since 2013, scoring 636 points with Whitman College runner-up with 591. University of Puget Sound (411) and Linfield University (382) rounded out the top four in the team standings.
Gassman was runner-up in the 200-yard backstroke, shaving off almost five seconds from the prelims to the finals. The sophomore touched the wall in two minutes, 7.59 seconds, finishing just 0.39 seconds off event champion Frances Lenz from Whitman College. Teammate Lola Chargualof was 14th overall in the same event, finishing in 2:18.34.
Gassman later placed fourth in the 200-yard butterfly in 2:12.95 with
Riley Maher in hot pursuit, placing one spot back in fifth in 2:13.24. PLU also received a 10th place effort from
Melissa Zuniga (2:24.77) and a 13thplace showing from
Ellie Cutting (2:33.40).
Scout Hawkins opened the evening session with a fourth place showing in the 1,650-yard freestyle, touching the wall in 18:16.83. The Colorado native later finished fifth in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:27.08.
PLU closed out the meet by winning its heat of the 400-yard freestyle relay and placing fifth overall. Maher,
Karina Yevstifieieva, Chargualof, and Gassman charged down the pool in 3:40.1.
Sunday's efforts was a culmination of four days of swimming for the Lutes. On Thursday, PLU placed third in the 200-yard medley relay (1:48.95) and was fifth in the 800-yard freestyle relay (8:05.43). Friday's action saw Maher finish third in the 200-yard individual medley (2:09.45) and the PLU 200-yard medley relay team clocking a fourth place showing in 4:01.31.
Saturday saw Maher place third in the 400-yard individual medley (4:38.00) with Hawkins securing seventh in the same race in 4:48.73. PLU also boasted B Final winners in
Julissa Pernsteiner in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:08.72) and Gassman in the 100-yard backstroke (59.05).
